This year, proud MCM sponsor U-Haul is making major moves to promote wellness amongst its team members with the rollout of a brand new program geared toward runners. Monique Wantland, U-Haul Wellness Program Manager, offered U-Haul team members the chance to be on a team of runners that will participate in the 44th MCM.
Employees from the United States and Canada could enter to win if they met all of the company qualifications. Prospects had to finish a race in March and submit photo evidence, as well as write a letter explaining why they wanted to join this running team. U-Haul reimbursed all applicants for registration fees up to $25. After being reviewed by a committee, the running team was selected.
“Four of our team members are Veterans,” shared Wantland. “We give them starter kits, wellness bags and a running coach and we put them in a private group with each other to keep them interacting throughout the whole year.”
One of those U-Haul running team members is Marine Corps Veteran Jonathan Grant. Grant, who has worked at U-Haul since 2010, served four years in the military, finishing as a Corporal. He is currently a Facility Maintenance Tech.
“I’ve always been a little bit of a runner, I was a swimmer and cross country runner. This will be my first time running more than six miles at once and my first time in Washington D.C.,” explained Grant.
Grant expressed how helpful it has been having a running community to confide in, thanks to U-Haul . He hopes to complete the Marine Corps Marathon successfully this October, with his co-workers by his side.
U-Haul, founded by a WWII Navy veteran and his wife in 1945, dedicates a portion of its community work and charity support to veteran organizations and initiatives. U-Haul has been honored repeatedly as a leading veteran-friendly U.S. employer, recently ranked #13 of the Top 100 Military-Friendly Employers. It continues to emphasize the recruitment and hiring of veterans.
U-Haul has been a proud sponsor of the Marine Corps Marathon for more than a decade, supporting “The People’s Marathon,” the Historic Half and MCM Event Series with everything from U-Haul cargo vans to 26-foot trucks.
