The U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial is currently undergoing a lengthy rehabilitation and will remain hidden by scaffolding on MCM Day. Runners will still receive finisher medals from U.S. Marines at the foot of the Memorial and have memories preserved by MarathonFoto photographers, who will capture images of runners in front of a backdrop featuring a picture of the statue.
The U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial rehabilitation project is the result of a gift of over $5 million provided by philanthropist David Rubenstein.
Future MCMs will include a reconstructed Memorial access road leading to the MCM finish line with refurbished grounds and stunning Memorial.
The National Park Service will re-gild the engravings on the sculpture’s pedestal, clean and wax the sculpture and granite base, and improve lighting, landscaping, and infrastructure. This project also includes funding to enrich educational materials and park signs.
While the rehabilitation will cause runners to miss a sought-after photo op at the finish line, the meaning of the Memorial continues to pervade the spirit of the event by honoring the Marine Corps.
