Every journey begins with a single step. Every marathon begins with mile one. And every goal begins with a moment of inspiration. In this spirit, the MCM Organization is motivating youngsters and families to run with the Marines in any or all of the one-mile events now on the 2019 schedule.
The introduction of a new one-mile run to coincide with the Quantico 12K on August 24 aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico brings the total of one-mile runs to three.
“The one-mile distance events are a way to create moments of shared joy and accomplishment for families with their young runners, whether hustling alongside the kids or cheering them on to the finish,” says MCM Director Rick Nealis. “They are also intended for individuals, who might otherwise be hesitant about running, to start down that path with a ‘feel good’ experience.”
Here’s the skinny on these slimmed down distance events:
- Quantico Mile, part of the Quantico 12K. Saturday, August 24. Marine Corps Base Quantico. This one-mile run is open to runners of all ages- individuals, parents and kids, youngsters, family members of athletes participating in the 12K or Tri that morning…anyone and everyone can register to run a mile in this untimed event that happens at Officer Candidate School aboard the Marine base. All participants are presented an official event shirt and commemorative bib. Registration is $10 for runners ages 5-12 and $23 for all others.
- MCM Kids Run. Saturday, October 26. Pentagon North parking lot. The MCM Kids Run presented by Virginia529 welcomes nearly 3,600 children between ages 5-12 to participate in the one-mile just-for-fun run. The event field is reserved only for the youngsters though everyone is invited to cheer the participants. The Marines will host warm-ups with the runners before supporting them throughout the course oftentimes running with the pumped-up kids. The MCM Kids Run includes pre and post event entertainment, activity booths, games, giveaways, mascots and music. Runners receive a T-shirt, collectible bib, awesome finisher medal and post-event snack. Shuttles are available from Metro to the event start line. Registration is just $10.
- Turkey Trot Mile. Saturday, November 23. Marine Corps Base Quantico. Individuals, kids and families can take flight on a one-mile run that starts and finishes before the Turkey Trot 10K. Strollers are permitted so even the littlest hatchlings can participate. Great t-shirts for all participants. Petting zoo and hospitality highlight the finish line. Registration is $20.
Adding to the rewards, registered participants in these events will receive a special offer from Silver Diner, proud MCM sponsor. After the run, Silver Diner will email a certificate for a BOGO (Buy One Get One) burger, the award-winning restaurant’s most popular and exclusive offer.
So whether you are a grade schooler or an octogenarian or anything in between, there’s a mile for you to run with the Marine.
