On this National Running Day, I’d like to highlight a core element of the Marine Corps Marathon Organizations mission: promoting physical fitness as the foundation of a healthy, fulfilling life.
Research shows that a sedentary lifestyle can cause lasting cardiovascular damage as early as our late 30s. In contrast, regular aerobic activity—like running—not only protects heart health but also elevates mood, enhances creativity, and fosters a sense of well-being.
Running is more than just exercise; it’s a long-term commitment to resilience, longevity, and improved quality of life. And when guided by a clear goal—like training for a race—it becomes a purposeful practice. That goal brings structure, motivation, and the consistency needed to fully realize the benefits running offers.
While running isn’t only about crossing a finish line, preparing for one may be one of the most meaningful ways we can show up for ourselves—day after day.
