Historic Half

#RunWithTheMarines, again in 2015. This time in Fredericksburg, VA for the Marine Corps Historic Half. Register for the 2015 Marine Corps Historic Half to be held on Sunday, May 17, 2015.

The Historic Half is perfectly situated halfway between the capital of the Commonwealth in Richmond and the nation’s capital. The hugely popular Half has made historic Fredericksburg a fashionable spring weekend getaway. The scenic course tours colonial sites and the quaint downtown before scaling ominous Hospital Hill to be greeted at the finish by the US Marines. Along the way, runners pass significant landmarks dating back to our nation’s beginnings and notable neighborhoods that were home to America’s forefathers, including Presidents George Washington and James Monroe.

Without question, the most exacting segment of the 13.1 mile run is the steady 200 foot rise in elevation that occurs over a span of one mile late in the course. Hospital Hill has become a thing of legend. Locals know about the hill located adjacent to Mary Washington Healthcare, and out-of-towners soon learn from social media connections or by scoping out the course elevation chart that an arduous uphill challenge awaits between miles 10 and 11 of the course.

Conquer the hill and celebrate! The Historic Half boasts fantastic finisher medals, terrific technical participant shirts and the only start ceremony capped off by the shouts of a town crier and the blast of a vintage musket.

The 2014 Historic Half was an epic day with a new course record established and the second-most finishers (6,020) in the event’s seven-year history. Local runner and Historic Half record holder Tim Young crossed the finish in 1:05:09, breaking his own course record of 1:06:57. The nearly-perfect day for running was made complete as Plainfield, N.J. runner David Mercado became the final finisher of the Marine Corps Historic Half. Surrounded by U.S. Marines cheering him in cadence, Mercado admitted, “A year ago I weighed 440 pounds and couldn’t run a mile and now look at me today.”

VA Runner leads training runs up Hospital Hill
There's no better way to prepare for the arduous incline of Hospital Hill then to head out on a training run. The 200-foot continuous incline up Hospital Hill poses the biggest contest for runners as they dare to defy "the Hill" located on the Marine Corps Historic Half, Historic 10K and Semper Fred 5K courses.

Historic Half sponsor VA Runner is introducing free group training to prepare runners for this signature challenge located on the Mary Washington Healthcare campus. The training distances will be from three to six miles.

Prior to each training run, participants will meet at the VA Runner store located at 1993 Carl D. Silver Parkway in Fredericksburg's Central Park.

The Hospital Hill training runs will be held on April 28 at 6 p.m. VA Runner will provide tips on pacing and running form, stretching and nutrition.
