Karnazes to Receive Award at MCM

Dean Karnazes, the ultramarathon man, will be the featured speaker at the hugely popular pre-event pasta dinner during MCM Weekend known as the MCM Carbo Dining In. The event will be held at the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center on Saturday, October 26. Advance purchase of tickets are required to attend the dinner. A few dozen tickets remain available for purchase through Sunday, October 13.

Karnazes will be presented with an award on behalf of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition prior to his inspirational remarks.

“The President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition is proud to recognize Dean Karnazes with a Lifetime Achievement Award,” said Kristina Harder, acting Executive Director of the Council. “Mr. Karnazes’ many accomplishments as an ultra-marathoner have inspired millions of Americans, and his efforts to encourage youth to lead healthy and active lives demonstrate his unwavering dedication to promoting physical activity nationwide.”

The mission of the Council is to increase sports participation among youth of all backgrounds and abilities and to promote healthy and active lifestyles for all Americans. The Lifetime Achievement Award is given annually to up to five individuals whose careers have greatly contributed to the advancement or promotion of physical activity, fitness, sports, or nutrition nationwide.

Karnazes lobbied to be presented the award during MCM Weekend, specifically on the eve of his participation in the inaugural MCM50K.

“I am deeply honored to be receiving this prestigious award. And what better occasion that the Marine Corps Marathon amongst my peers who share the same values of physical excellence, health, dedication and service,” offers Karnazes.

Factors considered in the selection process included span and scope of career; population and area of PCSFN mission served; reach of individual’s work; successes for the individual; and miscellaneous information. Others receiving recognition this year (although not at the MCM) include James R. Andrews, M.D., Donna de Varona, Debra Kibbe and Jill Vialet.

The Carbo Dining In will also feature a live performance by the Marine Corps Base Quantico Band.

In addition to the dinner, runners can meet Dean on the MCM Ask Me Stage at the Health & Fitness Expo on Saturday, October 26 at 12:30 p.m.
