MCM Forward
Since 2008, the Marine Corps Marathon has hosted satellite marathons in Iraq and Afghanistan. Touted as the Marine Corps Marathon Forward, service members have gathered to participate in the 26.2 mile test of endurance in excruciating heat, onboard ships and in unfriendly terrain.
More than 6,000 miles from the Arlington, VA finish line, deployed Marines can earn bragging rights as a MCM finisher by completing the required distance as determined by an on-site organizer in cooperation with MCM officials.
“During lengthy and sometimes stressful deployments, the Marines continue to embody the values of physical excellence and fitness. The MCM Forward offers the Marines and those men and women in the other branches of service a training goal to keep motivated while proudly serving our country far from home,” said Rick Nealis, MCM Race Director.
Marine Corps Historic Half Forward Stationed in Iraq and over 6,000 miles away from Fredericksburg, VA, CPT Sitze and Dianna Terpin didn't want to miss the chance to log 13.1 miles on May 16, 2010. Both women ran and completed the Marine Corps Historic Half where they are currently stationed. The women are proud to show their competitor shirts and finisher medals.
More than just lending its name, the MCM contributes to the operation of MCM Forwards providing event guidance and logistical support including race bibs, competitor shirts and patches. Official finishers of the MCM Forward will receive a medal upon their completion, plus a certificate. GEICO, MCM sponsor, proudly supports this program.
