30th MCM Recap

The Marine Corps Marathon proudly celebrated 30 years with the largest number of runners crossing the Arlington, VA start line with 19,211 reaching the Iwo Jima Monument and the finish.

Ruben Garcia, 34, of Mexico was the first to cross the finish line in the men’s category with a time 2:22:18, despite struggling with a hamstring injury starting at mile 24. Hot on Garcia’s heels was second place finisher Carl Rundell, 37, of Birmingham, MI, with a time of 2:22:26. The eight-second difference was the closest finish in MCM history! Third place finisher was Centreville, VA native Eric Post, 26 with a time of 2:23:54.

The women’s race was dominated by Susannah Kvasnicka, 33, of Great Falls, VA. She captured the women’s title with a time of 2:47:10. Second place went to Liz Wilson, 27, of Eugene, OR, finishing in 2:50:03. Emily Brozozowski, 26, of Savannah, GA rounded out the top 3, crossing the finish in 2:54:58.

The MCM 8K boasted 1,070 finishers and the Healthy Kids Fun Run, presented by The Washington Post, represented more than 90 schools with 1,065 participants!

With MyMarathonDVD, runners can watch themselves running the 30th MCM in high-resolution digital video. Individual runner scenes are edited into the race storyline with the best race highlights, scenic video, monuments, narration, music, and cheers from the crowd.

Crossing the Line

Results CD and Finisher Certificate

The MCM presents recognition awards to runners in dozens of categories. Unofficial results are still being reviewed for accuracy by the MCM staff. Following a thorough review of start and finish times, runner photos and split times, results will be finalized and made official. Finisher certificates and awards will be mailed in December. The MCM Official Finisher Results CD provided by MarathonFoto will also be sent to all finishers. The Results CD includes searchable results database, slideshow from MCM weekend, award results and more!

There are lots of marathons and the Marines are proud and honored you elected to run the Marine Corps Marathon. A return run is always encouraged. Registration for the 31st MCM will begin on May 17th at noon eastern on the MCM website. Be sure to check this web site regularly for updated registration information. 2006 will once again be rolling registration on a first come, first served basis.

MCM Runners' Club...Five is a Magic Number

Runners who have completed five or more MCMs are encouraged to join the MCM Runners' Club. No fee, just send copies of five or more finisher certificates to the MCM office for admission to this special group. Runners receive commemorative patches certifying the five, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30-year milestones plus a guaranteed entry into any MCM. Fax certificates to 703/784-2265 or mail copies to MCM PO Box 188, Quantico, VA 22134.

Chip Return

To all of the MCM runners who blasted past the finish line and did not get a chance to return your chip, or for whatever the reason may have been, please remember to return the chip as soon as possible. The due date is November 30 to avoid a $30 charge. Wrap the chip securely and send it to Marine Corps Marathon, PO Box 188, Quantico VA, 22134, attention: Chip.

30 Years of Great Volunteers

The Marine Corps Marathon would like to thank the nearly 4,000 civilians, Marines and Sailors who volunteered on race day. The MCM greatly appreciates the support of all who volunteered, helping earn the event recognition as the best organized marathon. Volunteers play an important role in the success of the MCM by supporting packet pick-up, water points, aid stations, info tents, food stations and many other areas of the event.

Wear in the World Photo Contest

Where in the world will you wear your purple MCM competitor shirt? Be sure to pack your purple MCM mock neck wherever you go and take a picture! Whether it’s the Grand Canyon, the slopes of Vermont, the Super Bowl or a cruise. Digital and hard copy photos are welcome. Send your picture including your name, age, phone number and email address, as well as the location of the picture. Photos will be accepted until April 1, 2006 and may be featured in next year’s MCM race program.

30 Years Running...Congratulations to the Groundpounders

In 1976 among the 1,175 participants, five men set out on a journey to complete the first Marine Corps Marathon. Whether the it was their first marathon or just one of many, the MCM became an annual event for five incredible men. Thirty years later, these five remain the only participants to finish every MCM since its inception. Congratulations to Will Brown--4:21:19; Roger Burkhart--5:16:37; Matthew Jaffe--6:29:08; Al Richmond--4:47:35; and Mel Williams--3:25:59 on another great run!

Washington Caps Special Offer for MCM Participants

Free Phone Calls provided by AT&T in the Finish Festival Tent

More than 1,300 MCM runners enjoyed free phone calls anywhere in the world at the AT&T booth in the Finish Festival Tent. The runners reached out and touched friends and family in 31 states (including Louisiana, Illinois, Arkansas, California, and Montana) and 17 countries (including New Zealand, Pakistan, Iran, Nigeria, Japan, and Kenya). Thanks to AT&T for supporting such a great post race service!
