2003 Marine Corps Marathon Poster Contest Winner

After assisting in the 2000 MCM as one of the 2,500 Marines stationed along the race course and running in the 2002 race, Sgt. David Smith, Combat Illustrator, Headquarters Marine Corps, scanned photographs from previous years and decided diversity was the true face of "The People's Marathon." Marine Corps Marathon Race Director Rick Nealis and Brigadier General Joseph Composto, Commanding General of Marine Corps Base Quantico, felt Smith had captured an essential eliminate of the MCM in his artwork. Smith's design was selected out of the nearly dozens of entries as the look to represent the 28th Marine Corps Marathon.

For creating the winning artwork, Sgt. Smith receives an entry to the 28th MCM, plus Marine Corps Marathon clothing and training apparel from the new MCM store.

Maggiano's Loves Runners

A proud sponsor of the 28th Marine Corps Marathon, Maggiano's Little Italy has created a Chicken Picatta recipe every runner will enjoy. Italian food has traditionally been the food of choice on the day before a marathon or major endurance event. Runners know pasta provides the endurance athlete with the necessary carbohydrates to last the race. However, a diet is not complete with only carbohydrates. Protein is important as well especially for muscle recovery. Chicken Picatta provides protein, is relatively low fat, and simple to prepare. Enjoy this dish with a salad, which provides vitamins and minerals for the healthy athlete.

Ask MCM

The MCM receives considerable runner feedback and inquiries at marathon@nt.quantico.usmc.mil. The Extra Mile will tackle some of the most frequently asked questions.

Q-I am registered for the 2003 Marine Corps Marathon but I will not be able to participate. I am aware that the entry fee is nonrefundable. Do I have any other options?

A-Yes! This year MCM is giving registered runners unable to participate in the sold-out October 26 race the opportunity to transfer or defer their entry.

The transfer policy allows runners to transfer their bib number to another runner seeking entry. To transfer a bib number, registered runners must complete and mail in the MCM transfer form. The form requires the registered runner's information and the information of the person receiving the transferred bib number. The MCM will send a transfer application to the transferee, which must be returned by September 4, 2003 with the $20 transfer fee.

The deferment procedure for registered runners defers a 2003 guaranteed entry to the 2004 race. Deferring does not transfer a 2003 entry fee to 2004. Runners who elect to defer must pay the 2004 entry fee but will receive a special MCM in-training shirt for the 29th Marine Corps Marathon to be held on October 31, 2004. This policy is not available to those runners who deferred a 2002 entry into this year's race. Deadline for deferrals is October 15, 2003.

Share Your Story...or Photos

When a parent states they will do anything for their children, believe it. Two years ago, Loretta Reynolds, 41, of Hillsboro, NJ decided to mark her 40th birthday by flying to London and running the Flora London Marathon. After which, she vowed to never run another marathon. That was before her son, Jeremy, made the brave decision to enlist in the Marines, and then had a change of heart prior to leaving for Parris Island. After working with Jeremy's teachers to ensure he graduated school in time to attend boot camp, Loretta dug down deep and came up with something to not only motivate him to go but to boot camp, but to see it all the way though. She made him a deal--If he completed his training, she would run the Marine Corps Marathon. In May 2003, Jeremy became Private Reynolds and Loretta became bib # 14187. Although, Jeremy has been stationed to Ft. Knox and is not likely to make it to the Marathon, he can be as proud of his mom, as she is of him. Loretta may have sworn "never again," still she has a great attitude and is excited about the event. "For everything he went though in boot camp, this will be like a walk in the park."

As always, if you have an interesting, inspiring or unusual reason for running the marathon, please share your story by emailing marathon@nt.quantico.usmc.mil. Send along your best MCM photos...they may be featured in this year's race program.

Exploring Hydration

The MCM course will include 13 water points with Deer Park water and Ultima replenisher available, essential tools in running a successful marathon. Runners are urged to become familiar with their individual hydration needs in an effort to minimize the risks associated with dehydration and hyponatremia and maximize the resources available on the course.

The United States of America Track and Field (USATF) website explains hyponatremia "most often occurs in exercise lasting four hours or longer and results primarily from consuming excessive fluids and is exacerbated by not replacing sodium losses." The results in severe cases may include seizures, increased intracranial pressure, pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs), respiratory arrest, or even death.

The USATF released new information regarding hydration and hyponatremia. In the past, it has been recommended that runners drink as much fluid as possible to "stay ahead of their thirst." The newest information reveals that runners should be "sensitive to the onset of thirst as the signal to drink." Being aware of thirst will guide runners to drink and prevent dehydration and also lower their risk of hyponatremia. The USATF website has an online self-testing program to assist runners in determining an individual rate of sweat loss.

Why Volunteer?

After returning from the Peace Corps, Bertha Hall, 56, of Washington DC, was required to find a volunteer project back in the States. She chose the Marine Corps Marathon. Her decision was based on the unique nature of the event--no prize money. Bertha delighted in the idea that people were running the MCM simply for enjoyment and not prizes. After her first experience as a MCM volunteer in the early 90s, Bertha made a resolution to continue to volunteer for the MCM for years to come. "I feel that it is a great event; the race director keeps me coming back," said Bertha. "The Marines treat me as if I were equally important to the event." For more information about volunteer opportunities like water stations, hospitality areas, baggage tent and information, check out the MCM online volunteer registration.
