5 hours 46 minutes and 14 seconds into the 29th Marine Corps Marathon, James Hotchkiss of Anderson, California passed through the finish arch assuring his place in MCM history as the 300,000th all-time finisher. Hotchkiss' accomplishment will be forever acknowledged by a commemorative shadow box presented to him by the MCM.
Season of Giving
Navy Marine Corps Relief Society Donation--Charles E. Smith Commercial Realty raised $3,000 to be donated to the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society during this year's Crystal City Street Spectacular. Funds were generated by sales of menu tastings from the fine restaurants located on Crystal Drive. The Navy Marine Corps Relief Society provides financial, educational and other assistance to members of the Naval Services of the United States, eligible family members and survivors in need.
MCM Charity Partners--Marine Corps Marathon sets pace for charity as the 2003 USA Track & Field Charitable Race of the Year. This year, charity runners representing causes including AIDS, Leukemia, Autism, MS and St. Jude Hospital participated in the MCM generating more than $5 million.
Toys for Tots--Working with Marine Corps Reserves, the Marine Corps Marathon collected nearly 740 toys to be donated to the Toys for Tots Campaign. Children registering for the Healthy Kids Fun Run donated the toys.

Now This is a Real Long Distance Romance
Back in February 2004, Julie Marlin from Oak Hill, VA asked her boyfriend Ken Lasure from Springfield, VA to run with her in her first marathon. Little did she know he would have a big surprised planned for her at the finish. After running 26.2 miles, Ken dropped to one knee, not from exhaustion, but to propose to Julie. He carried the diamond ring the entire marathon. Julie screamed and proceeded to tackle him drawing the attention of the medical support staff that came running over with a stretcher. The medics were relived to see that the couple was fine. By the way, Julie said ‘yes'.
