A Wonderland of Winter Workouts
Don't let the chill of the winter months keep you from your workout routine.
When taking to the streets in colder temperatures, be sure to remember these
safety tips we've all heard, but could benefit from a gentle reminder.
What to do:
• Get creative. Try cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, both highly
aerobic activities sure to complement your training routine.
• Get back to the basics. Stretch out cold muscles gently before
running, then stretch warm muscles thoroughly after to avoid strain or
injury.
• Stay hydrated. Even though cooler temperatures and light breezes
can make long runs more comfortable, your body still needs large amounts of
fluid.
What to wear:
• Dress in layers. Cover your head and face, and mouth in extremely
cold weather, and be sure to keep your feet and body dry by waterproofing
your shoes and wearing moisture-wicking fabrics.
• Stay visible. Reflective top layers are of utmost importance on
gloomy days or nights when the sun sets a little too early.
Don't forget:
• Be sure to stick to your normal safety routines: run only on clear,
well light trails and roads, bring a buddy, take a cell phone, stay in
familiar territory, and be sure to tell someone the route you plan to take.
• When running on slippery stretches, shorten your stride and run with
your knees slightly bent.
• Be sure to make it home or to your car before you become too tired.
Risk of hypothermia increases when you begin to lose metabolic heat to
compensate for the heat being lost to the outside air.
Virtual Video

light and did not get a chance to return your chip, please remember to return the chip. Wrap it
securely and return to Marine Corps Marathon, PO Box 188, Quantico VA,
