Charities who partner with the MCM annually enjoy the fruits of their fundraising while runners successfully train on behalf of significant causes. This year, MCM charity runners have gone far above expectations garnering just over $5 million dollars for 131 charitable organizations. These efforts have resulted in an overall charitable increase in excess of $1.5 million raised over last year's marathon event.

POTOMAC RIVER RUNNING VICTORS OF 2013 MCM RUNNING STORE COMPETITION
The Potomac River Running Store of Arlington, VA, has claimed victory in the MCM Running Store Competition. Eleven running specialty stores from Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. organized teams of at least three runners who participated in the 38th MCM on Sunday, Oct. 27.

TRIUMPHANT TROTTERS TAKE TOP TURKEY TROPHIES

Nearly 1,200 runners completed the annual Turkey Trot 10K, hosted by the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico today. Overall winners received 23-pound turkeys, while masters and first-place age award winners took home 15-pound prize birds. Second place age award winners received pumpkin pies.

MCM10K HOSTS RECORD PARTICIPATION; LEAD RUNNER DQED
While the MCM10K enjoyed record participation with 7,577 finishers, the first place 10K finisher has been disqualified for running with an illegal entry. After breaking tape across the MCM10K finish line at 32:20, the unidentified runner from France admitted he was participating while wearing a friend's bib and had not officially registered to run the event.

38TH MCM RESULTS IN SECOND LARGEST FINISH
The Marine Corps Marathon hosted its second-largest participation during the 38th running of the event surpassing 23,000 finishers for the second consecutive year ushering in 23,480 finishers. The event began under ideal running conditions that included temperatures climbing comfortably throughout the day from 49 degrees at the Arlington, VA start. The MCM10K, held simultaneously with the MCM, welcomed a record with 7,576 finishers who completed the 6.2 mile run from the National Mall to the finish at the Marine Corps War Memorial. Although the finisher totals remain unofficial, “The People’s Marathon” enjoyed a successful day with runners, spectators, thousands of volunteers and U.S. Marines. Everyone within about four miles of the start line on Route 110 witnessed a fantastic skydive as a 7,800 square-foot American flag was parachuted in by an 11-member skydiving team, including a U.S. Marine Wounded Warrior.

WOUNDED MARINE TO OPEN MCM CEREMONIES WITH SKYDIVE AT THE START
A U.S. Marine wounded a year ago in Afghanistan will make his first official jump into MCM opening ceremonies in Arlington, VA on Sunday, Oct. 27. Staff Sgt. James Sides of Gainesville, FL will join fellow Marine and Army veterans parachuting from a fixed wing aircraft immediately before the start of the 38th MCM.

MCM TO HOST PRESS BRIEF AT NATIONAL PRESS CLUB ON OCT. 25
The MCM is hosting a press brief on Friday, Oct. 25 at 12:30 p.m. at the National Press Club at 529 14th Street NW in Washington, DC. The media brief will address MCM Weekend security measures, new lottery registration for 2014 and feature runners dedicating their marathon to those who died in the Navy Yard shooting on Sept. 16. MCM'S RUNNER TRACKING SERVICES DELIVER RESULTS
The MCM is partnering with Nissan to offer the latest in individual runner tracking services to both MCM participants and spectators. The Runner Broadcast and Track a Runner services enable runners and their supporters to obtain instant updates of a runner's progress every 10K of the 26.2 mile marathon course from Arlington, VA start, through the nation's capital and all the way to the exciting finish at the Marine Corps War Memorial. Both services are available free of charge.

HEALTHY KIDS FUN RUN REGISTRATION UP AND RUNNING
Registration is filling quickly for the Healthy Kids Fun Run, a one-mile, untimed event for children ages 5-12 presented by the MCM. Limited entries are available in the 11:20 and 11:40 a.m. waves. The 9:30, 10:00, 10:30, and 11:00 a.m. waves are full at this time. All participants will receive a T-shirt, bib, medal, and healthy snacks as part of the event.

The MCM10K presented by Aetna has filled all 10,000 available entries for the sixth consecutive year. The MCM10K annually held in conjunction with the MCM, starts amid beautiful landscape on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., runs across the Potomac and finishes at the iconic Marine Corps War Memorial. 38TH MCM UNVEILS FLATTER COURSE
The 38th MCM course will feature a flatter course and a new approach to the U.S. Capitol. The notable change in course elevation occurs from Miles 6 through Mile 9 with runners now travelling north on Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway to Beach Drive and then venturing back along the Parkway on roads that are relatively flat.

U.S. MARINE WINS INAUGURAL QUANTICO TRI
Nearly 250 athletes competed in the inaugural Quantico Tri held today aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA. Runners faced not only the challenge of competing in a triathlon, but also braved continual rain as they completed sprint triathlon distances of a 400-meter pool swim, 9-mile cycle course, and 5K run.

HISTORIC HALF BOASTS IMPRESSIVE ECONOMIC IMPACT ON FREDERICKSBURG, VA
The Marine Corps Historic Half has good reason to boast with as much as $21 million spent by event participants throughout the City of Fredericksburg, VA from May 17-19, according to an economic impact study being released today. "The Sixth Annual Marine Corps Historic Half: Economic Contribution and Characteristics of Participants," was conducted by Dr. Mukesh Srivastava, a Business professor at the University of Mary Washington. The comprehensive report includes demographic analysis, runner statistics and a post-event survey of participants, with 22 percent being first-time visitors to Fredericksburg.

RUN AMUCK BUILDS A BETTER MUD PIT FOR JUNE 8 ADVENTURE ON QUANTICO
How do you build a muddier mud pit? The organizers of Run Amuck are busy doing just that for the MCM's muddiest event that promises participants will be a complete mess during the event on Saturday, June 8. Three giant challenges will be part of the 3.5 mile fun run though the hills and trails of Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA. To make more mud, the MCM staff is utilizing Bentonite clay. When mixed with dirt and water, the nontoxic Bentonite compound adheres to the skin and to clothing, much like taking a mud bath. Bentonite is safe, as it is frequently used in facials and spa treatments.

OVER 7.700 RUNNERS CROSS MARINE CORPS HISTORIC HALF FINISH
On a misty but warm morning, 7,781 runners energized the City of Fredericksburg, VA as part of the inaugural Historic 10K, the Semper Fred 5K and the largest Marine Corps Historic Half to date. Joining them was Actor Sean Astin, star of "Rudy" and "Lord of the Rings," who completed the Marine Corps Historic Half in 2:11:58. Astin served as honorary starter for the thousands of runners who came to Fredericksburg to take on the 13.1 mile challenge highlighted by the steep incline up infamous Hospital Hill, located on the Marine Washington Healthcare campus.

Marine Corps Historic Half Weekend begins this Friday, May 17 with the opening of the Healthy Lifestyle Expo presented by Hyundai Hope On Wheels. Beginning at 3:30 p.m., Historic Half participants and visitors will gather outside the Expo & Conference Center to enjoy the grand opening event with military pageantry and prizes just before the Expo doors open at 4:00 p.m. This year's Expo offers even more in modern fitness apparel and gear, cooking and Zumba demonstrations, free sampling of nutritional products and the two-day Historic Half Speaker Series. But as thousands of runners worldwide attempted to register, a system failure contributed to registration delays posing additional challenges for runners wanting to secure a coveted spot for the Oct. 27 event in Arlington, VA and the nation's capital. "ACCESS GRANTED" TO 38TH MCM FOR 2,177 FINISHERS OF MARINE CORPS 17.75K
Despite chilly spring temperatures today, 2,177 runners met the challenge of the Marine Corps 17.75K, completing the 11.03-mile event through the winding streets and trails of Prince William Forest Park in Prince William County, VA. Each 17.75K participant obtained "Access Granted" at the finish line, solidifying their coveted spots in th 38th Marine Corps Marathon, before registration opens to the public at noon Eastern on March 27.

The Runners bRUNch includes a 5K shakeout run and catered brunch featuring guest speaker Chuck Engle, known as "the Marathon Junkie." Polk Elementary on Thursday, Feb. 21. The Lynbrook ceremony will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the school's gymnasium; the James K. Polk ceremony will begin at 1:00 p.m. also in the school's gymnasium.

MCM OFFERS MILITARY DISCOUNT STARTING FEB. 23 FOR ACTIVE DUTY & RESERVISTS
The MCM, in partnership with GEICO, is offering a 15 percent discount for all Active Duty and Reserve military members registering for the 38th MCM that will be held on Sunday, Oct. 27. The registration discount will be available online starting at noon Eastern on Feb. 23 with the savings continuing through midnight EST on March 24. Military members registering during this four-week period will pay $84.15, rather than the full registration cost of $99.
