The enthusiasm, intensity and energy of runners and spectators at the 37th Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) was the culmination of an effective and unparalleled online and social media community-building effort that reached a potential audience in excess of 11 million individuals following the Oct. 28, 2012 event held in Arlington, VA, and the nation’s capital. The comprehensive communication effort was anchored by a dynamic and inspiring Facebook page, an informative website, an upgraded web-based navigational support application and a runner tracking service that provided instant updates of runners’ times from the course via email or text message, over an individual’s Twitter feed or on a participant’s Facebook page.

FIVE VIRGINIA SCHOOLS EARN HEALTHY SCHOOL AWARDS
Held on Oct. 27 in Arlington, VA, the Healthy Kids Fun Run hosted its largest participation to date, topping 3,000 children ages five through 12.  Nearly half of this race field participated through the coordinated effort of physical education teachers and PTA groups from area schools.  The top five schools with the most students registered are honored with the Healthy School Award, including a monetary donation to their physical education department from MCM partner, Sodexo.

TOP FINISH IS GRAVY FOR NAVY OFFICER IN TURKEY TROT 10K
Lieutenant Commander Michael Krisman of the U.S. Navy trotted his way to victory at the Turkey Trot 10K, the final race in the 2012 MCM Event Series organized by the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM). LCDR Krisman, 36, a resident of Montclair, VA, completed the course in 35:41 to claim the first place finish and a 20 lb. turkey in his MCM event debut.

TURKEY TROT 10K RETURNS TO MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO
Brilliantly-colored falling leaves and chilly autumn air signify the return of the Turkey Trot 10K and Kids Mile to Marine Corps Base Quantico.  Held on Saturday, Nov. 17, the Turkey Trot 10K is the final event in the 2012 MCM Event Series organized by the MCM.  The Turkey Trot Kids Mile will precede the 10K at 8:30 a.m.

LARGEST MCM HOSTS 23,515 FINISHERS
In the largest participation in the event's 37 year history, the MCM welcomed 1,568 more participants then in any previous year when 23,515 runners from every state and 54 countries crossed the finish line at the Marine Corps War Memorial.  U.S. Army elite runners led the packk taking the top two spots as well as the Armed Forces Team Championship.

On Thursday, October 25, the MCM will open the spectacular Health & Fitness Expo presented by GE. A special opening ceremony will be held at 3:30 p.m. to kick off the three-day extravaganza that is free and open to the public.  The DC Armory is located at 2001 E. ACTOR ROB RIGGLE AND OLYMPIAN SHALANE FLANAGAN TO HEADLINE MCM WEEKEND

Actor, comedian and U.S. Marine Rob Riggle, known for his humorous film roles in “21 Jump Street,” “The Hangover,”  and “Step Brothers,” and for his gig as comedy prognosticator on “Fox NFL Sunday,” will serve as an honorary starter of the 37th Marine Corps Marathon (MCM). An Emmy Award-nominated actor, Riggle is also a lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve. On Sunday, Oct. 28, Riggle will join 2012 Olympic Marathoner Shalane Flanagan at the MCM start line in Arlington, VA to launch 30,000 runners in “The People’s Marathon.”

MCM OPENS SOCIAL MEDIA TRACKING SERVICES
MCM participants and supporters can take advantage of enhanced technologies providing immediate updates on a runner's progress as well as valuable course navigation information for the 37th MCM on Sunday, Oct. 28.  The MCM Track a Runner and the new Runner Broadcast Service are open for registration.  The services are free and sponsored by MCM partner Nissan.  For spectators, the new MCM Locator, a web-based application, provides distances to specific on-course sites, Metro wait times and pace-time based information.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL'S ROCKET CITY REDNECKS TEST THEIR LATEST INVENTION AT THE 37TH MCM
The Rocket City Rednecks have bombproofed a truck using beer cans in an effort to create armor for military vehicles and constructed a homemade hovercraft using a tarp from the garage. This October, they'll bring their unique mix of southern charm and advanced degrees to the 37th MCM in Washington, D.C., as Rocket City Rednecks star Dr. Travis Taylor runs the course wearing the Rednecks' latest invention.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC KIDS MAGAZINE SETS OUT TO CLAIM 2 GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS TITLES TIED TO RUNNING AND RECYCLING
In an effort to engage children in both fitness and recycling, National Geographic Kids magazine will attempt to break two Guinness World Records titles this fall.  Through the magazine's Run for the Planet program, in coordination with the prestigious MCM Healthy Kids Fun Run, people all over the world will attempt to set the Guinness World Records achievement for the most people to run 100 meters in 24 hours.  Participants will also send in athletic shoes to National Geographic Kids, which will be tied together to break the record for the longest chain of shoes, then recycled into athletic surfaces such as basketball courts and running tracks.

The MCM10K presented by Aetna has today sold out all available entries three weeks prior to last year's record sell out of 10,000 participants. This year, the field of 10,000 runners will be treated to even more impressive landscape in the most scenic area of the nation's capita, as the MCM10K starts at 12th Street and Madison Drive, outside the National Museum of Natural History.  The MCM10K will be held on Oct. 28 in conjunction with the 37th MCM.

U.S. MARINE CLAIMS VICTORY AT SOLD-OUT GENDER DEFENDER 5K
Marine Corps 2ndLt Nicholas Oltman, 24, of Fredericksburg, VA led 589 runners as top overall finisher at the pink- and blue-themed Gender Defender 5K, part of the MCM Event Series held aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico. With a time of 17:00, Oltman edged out Troy Mitchell, 31, of Quantico, VA, who finished in 17:21, and Jason Van Horn, 38, who finished with a time of 17:37. Oltman was the top military finisher in the Marine Corps Historic Half held on May 20.

2.545 FINISHERS MET THE RUN AMUCK CHALLENGE ON QUANTICO TODAY
The Marine Corps Marathon’s (MCM) muddiest event, Run Amuck, challenged 2,545 finishers to complete the 3.5 mile course through grueling obstacles, steep hills and deep mud pits in the event held today on Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA. Some runners not only met the challenge but faced the mud-packed adventure head first as they shimmied through the mud crawl, took to the berm climb and made their way through two giant mud pits, sometimes needing assistance from U.S. Marines to be pulled out from the muddy depths.

The fifth anniversary Marine Corps Historic Half marathon enjoyed its largest participation today with 5,973 finishers running the 13.1 mile event under beautiful blue skies and swells of patriotism. Fredericksburg, VA’s own Bert Jacoby, 29, finished first overall running the course in 1:11:33, beating his own best time of 1:15:02, set at the 2008 Historic Half.

U.S. MARINES WIN IRISH SPRINT 10K LEADING 1,693 RUNNERS
With the swiftness of leprechauns and dressed in vibrant hues of green, 1,693 runners dashed to the finish in today's Irish Sprint 10K, a festive but challenging 6.2 miles through Prince William Forest Park in Prince William County, VA.  U.S. Marines placed first among the men and women running the event with Marine Maj. Jason Kut, 34, finishing in 37:16 and Marine Capt. Erin Demchko, 33, finishing in 41:43.

Beginning at noon Eastern on Thursday, Feb. 23, all active duty and Reserve military members can receive a 15 percent savings for the 37th Marine Corps Marathon that will be held on Oct. 28.  Service members can register online during an exclusive two-week period through March 6, before the MCM opens to public registration on March 7.

LUCKY GOLDEN TICKET INSPIRES RUNNERS TO SELL OUT IRISH SPRINT 10K
The Irish Sprint 10K has sold out in record time as runners dashed to register for the 6.2 mile event that provides a guaranteed spot in the 37th Marine Corps Marathon (MCM). Every Irish Sprint 10K finisher participating in the March 17 event will claim their “lucky golden ticket” that provides a registration code to secure their place in the “The People‟s Marathon.”

2012 MCM EVENT SERIES OPENS REGISTRATION ON JANUARY 25
The 2012 MCM Event Series opens for online registration tomorrow, Jan. 25. This is the fifth year of the MCM Event Series of road races that are annually held March through November. In the tradition of the Luck O’ the Irish, the Irish Sprint 10K on March 17 will offer all finishers guaranteed entry into the 37th Marine Corps Marathon (MCM). The Irish Sprint 10K (6.2 miles) will be held along the trails and winding paths of scenic Prince William Forest Park in Prince William County, VA.

MARINE CORPS HISTORIC HALF OPENS REGISTRATION ON JAN. 25
The Marine Corps Historic Half marathon opens online discounted registration at noon Eastern on Wednesday, Jan. 25. All Historic Half participants, ages 10 and up, can save $15 off the registration fee through March 14, when the fee increases to $80. Historic Half registration is available on the MCM website at www.marinemarathon.com. Organized annually by the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM), the Historic Half will be held on Sunday, May 20 in Fredericksburg, VA.

MOUNT VERNON ELEMENTARY TO RECEIVE HEALTHY SCHOOL AWARD THIS WEEK
The students at Mount Vernon Community School in Alexandria are in for a big surprise when the MCM along with Miles the bulldog presents the Healthy School Award on Thursday, January 19.  This is the first year Mount Vernon will receive the award recognizing the students' participation in the Healthy Kids Fun Run held in Arlington, VA on Oct. 29 during MCM Weekend.  The school registered 115 students who participated in the one-mile fun run held in the Pentagon North parking lot.
