RUNNERS RACE TO REGISTER FOR HISTORIC HALF MARATHON
Like a winter flurry, area runners are racing to their computers to register for the Marine Corps Historic Half marathon.  During the first day of opened registration (Dec. 15), one runner per minute signed up for the event to be held on May 15, 2011 in Fredericksburg, VA.  Registration remains open at
www.marinemarathon.com until capacity of 8,000 runners is achieved.

HISTORIC HALF AND NEW RELAY OPEN REGISTRATION ON DECEMBER 15
The Marine Corps Historic Half marathon, one of the largest half marathons in Virginia, will open online registration beginning at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 15 at
www.marinemarathon.com.  Since 2008, the Historic Half marathon held in the scenic colonial city of Fredericksburg has increased in popularity and participation to an anticipated 8,000 runners in 2011.  The May 15 event is organized by the marine Corps Marathon (MCM) and U.S. Marines.

RESTON RETAILER WINS RUNNING STORE COMPETITION AT THE 35TH MCM
The Potomac River Running store of Reston, VA has captured the Running Store Team Competition held during the 35th Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) on Oct. 31.  The competition included runners representing 10 states located in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

FIVE VIRGINIA SCHOOLS TO RECEIVE HEALTHY SCHOOL AWARD
Five Virginia elementary schools leading the charge toward developing healthy students will receive the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) Healthy School Award and a $1,000 donation from MCM partner Sodexo.  In early 2011, each of the schools will receive the award for outstanding student participation in MCM's Healthy Kids Fun Run held on Oct. 30 in Arlington, VA.  The Healthy Kids Fun Run is designed for students ages 6 to 13.

BRITISH MARINE FINISHES TURKEY TROT 10K WITH ROYAL FLARE
A British Royal Marine today added international flare to the Turkey Trot 10K held aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico.  Marine Maj. Finlay Walls, 41, led all finishers while he completed the 10K in 32:28.  The Major and his family, of Edinboro, England, are currently living on Marine Corps Base Quantico as he attends Command and Staff College at Marine Corps University.  The Turkey Trot 10K event was held adjacent to Quantico's historic Butler Stadium on a course including nearby roadways and trails.

MCM's RICK NEALIS NAMED RACE DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR
Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) Race Director Rick Nealis has been named Race Director of the Year, receiving one of the most prestigious honors in the sport of running.  The award was presented by MarathonFoto and Road Race Management during a Nov. 11 reception held at Road Race Management's Race Directors annual meeting in Coral Gables, FL.

ARMED SERVICE MEMBERS TAKE THE LEAD AT THE 35TH MCM
Members of the U.S. Armed Services led the pack with a U.S. Air Force runner finishing first overall at the 35th Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) today. Air Force Second Lt. Jacob Bradosky finished "The People’s Marathon" with the unofficial time of 2:23:30. Ronald Kurui of Kenya was a fast second finishing in 2:23:41. The U.S. Marine Corps held its own with U.S. Marine Corps team runner 1st Lt. Sean Barrett finishing in 2:24:08 as the third top finisher overall. Returning MCM champion Lt. Cmdr. John Mentzer finished fourth overall at 2:24:16.

MCM TO SHOWCASE GREEK FLAME, NEW IPHONE APP, SECURITY TECHNOLOGY AT PRESS CONFERENCE
Marine Corps Marathon Race Director Rick Nealis will be joined by Vassilis Kaskarelis Ambassador of Greece to the United States to formally acknowledge the shared celebration of 35th running of "The People’s Marathon" and the 2,500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon. A flame from the Tomb of the Athenians has been loaned to the MCM and will be present throughout MCM Weekend.

The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) will celebrate the military roots of long distance running and feature the Marathon Flame from the Municipality of Marathon, Greece, during a ceremony in Philadelphia on Friday, Oct. 22. The ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. at the Philadelphia Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial, located at Front and Spruce Streets in Center City.

The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) will celebrate the military roots of long distance running while receiving the Marathon Flame from the Municipality of Marathon, Greece, during a ceremony in Hopkinton, MA, the sister-city of Marathon. The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21 outside the Hopkinton Police Department on 74 Main Street. The public is invited to attend.

MCM10K SELLS OUT WITH 10,000 PARTICIPANTS
The Marine Corps Marathon‟s (MCM) annual 6.2 mile event, the MCM10K presented by Aetna is now sold out with 10,000 registered participants, the largest race field in the event‟s five-year history. The MCM10K will be held on Oct. 31, the same day as the 35th MCM.

MCM10K REGISTRATION CLIMBS ABOVE 7,000 RUNNERS
The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) announced today that registration for the October 31 event has reached 70 percent capacity having surpassed 7,000 runners. The event race field has been expanded to 10,000 runners after the 2009 event closed out at 7,500 participants.

LONG-TIME MCM PARTICIPANTS TO INSPIRE NEW GENERATION OF RUNNERS
Over 700 runners will participate in the 35th Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) who have run five or more times in the event. As members of the MCM Runners Club, they receive a guaranteed entry for life to participate in "The People’s Marathon" and are being called upon to generate enthusiasm in the next generation of runners. All MCM Runners Club members registered for the October 31 MCM will be invited via email to Inspire A Miler on Saturday, October 30, the day prior to the 35th MCM.

MCM ANNOUNCES 2010 GREEN TEAM CHALLENGE WINNERS
The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) and FitPlanet announced today the winners of the 2010 MCM Green Team Challenge, an online contest to select the two runners with the most sustainable green plan for participating in the MCM. As contest winners, Christopher Stephens, 42, of New York, NY and Allison Lassoe, 47, of Sheffield, MA will comprise the MCM Green Team.

MCM ANNOUNCES FIRST TIMERS EVENT
The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM), long recognized as the best beginner marathon, will inaugurate over 11,000 new marathoners at this year’s event on October 31. The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) 2009 finisher medal is ranked number one among U.S. marathon medals, according to the May–June issue of Marathon & Beyond magazine. In the article, "Don’t Meddle With Tradition" written by Paul Gentry, the MCM medal has been recognized for best capturing the intent, style and image of the race.

ARLINGTON COUPLE AMOUNT FIRST FINISHERS AT CROSSROADS 17.75K
David Burnham, 26, of Arlington, VA, topped all 1,262 finishers in the Crossroads 17.75K by reaching the National Museum of the Marine Corps finish line in 1:03:37. After breaking the finish tape, the newly married Burnham waited at the finish for his wife, Sarah, 25, who placed third among the women finishing at 1:21:38.

At near record pace, the 35th Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) today sold out at 11:57 a.m. Eastern, with 30,000 participants registered to run on October 31. The MCM opened to the public on April 7 reaching full capacity in just under six days, marking the third fastest registration.

MCM REGISTERS RUNNERS AT RAPID PACE
Opening to a fever pitch at noon Eastern on April 7, the 35th Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) has registered 23,793 runners in the first 24 hours. Nearly 1,000 runners have registered per hour, resulting in almost 80 percent of the 30,000 slots sold.

MCM MOVES START TO BURKE, VA RESIDENCE
The iconic red arches that thousands of runners pass under at the start of the Marine Corps Marathon relocated to the Burke, VA home of the Schneller family on Tuesday, April 6.  Christine and Tim Schneller and their daughters were joined by MCM Race Director Rick Nealis on a short training run as part of the Comcast SportsNet “Start Marine Corps Marathon at Your House Contest.” The run concluded with the Schnellers breaking the official MCM finisher ribbon on their front lawn to kick-off the 2010 MCM registration season.

MCM UNVEILS NEW TIMING TECHNOLOGY
The Marine Corps Marathon is unveiling a new timing technology for all race participants.  The new B-tag timing device will be used beginning March 27 during the Run 2 Register 10K and Irish Sprint races organized by the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) on Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA.  The B-tag will be used in all other events, including the 35th MCM on October 31.

MCM EARNS ELITE RECOGNITION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES
The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) has been awarded silver-level certification from the Council for Responsible Sport (CRS) becoming the largest event to date to earn this distinction. CRS provides an independent, comprehensive certification for sustainable athletic events evaluating five categories: Waste, Climate, Materials & Equipment, Community & Outreach, and Health Promotion.
