Relay
The Historic Half relay consists of two-person running teams who together will complete the 13.1 mile distance of the Historic Half, running 6.55 miles each.
On event morning, the first member of each relay team will gather under the Historic Half start arch to begin their run, while the second member of each team boards a shuttle bus from the Walmart parking lot, located on Carl D. Silver Parkway in Central Park. Shuttle buses will depart beginning at 5:15 a.m. and ending at 6:45 a.m. The shuttles will transport those runners to the relay exchange point located in the Quarles Petroleum Inc., parking lot on Fall Hill Ave.
As the musket sounds, relay runner "A" will charge the Historic Half course through Central Park and across Cowan Blvd., into the Westwood neighborhood, turning on to William Street towards the University Mary Washington, until coming to relay exchange point at intersection of Pelham Street and Fall Hill Ave.
There, runners cross the timing mat to officially clock out for the first portion of the run and identify themselves to their running partner. There is no official hand off. The "B" relay runners will join Historic Half participants to complete the final 6.55 miles of the course by crossing the start mat in the Quarles lot.
After having completed the initial 6.55 miles, the first members of each relay team will be treated to hospitality at the relay exchange. Then, they will board shuttle buses bound for the Historic Half finish area, where they will wait to cheer on their relay partner.
The second member of each relay team will run to the final finish where they will receive hospitality and collect a pair of special relay finisher medals before meeting their relay partner at Family Link Up.
The combined finishing time of both relay runners will determine the winning Historic Half relay team. Awards will be presented to the top three relay teams with the combined fastest finish times.
